Road and Old Walls of Kahuwai

Road and Old Walls of Kahuwai

Penetrating heavy forest, the road is lined with ancient rock walls. Supported by a huge spring, this area was heavily cultivated and site of the wealthy village of Kahuwai. With plentiful food, 70 canoe sheds, and a score of heaus, or altars, this was home to some 1800 people, until measles killed the entire population in the nineteenth century. Even today it’s considered decidedly spooky by the local Hawaiians.

Photo circa 2005.
